Why might you use a nipple shield
Nipple shields are sometimes introduced to help with latching difficulties, flat or inverted nipples, or painful feeds. However, often they are suggested because of an issue which might actually be fixable in some other way and many mums come to me confused about how to use shields wisely. Without proper guidance using shields can sometimes lead to challenges with milk transfer to the baby, which can then affect your overall milk supply and may lead to having to supplement or even weaning from breastfeeding.
What are the challenges of using a nipple shield
Nipple shields are a really useful feeding tool, but they must not be used to “cover up” an underlying feeding issue without investigating the full cause. Also, you may feel unsure about whether you’re “doing it right,” how long to use a shield, or how to eventually stop. Some parents worry about becoming dependent on the shield or feel judged for using one.
